Miscellaneous Hockey Thoughts from David Johnson

Guess the Suspension = Yawn…

October 20th, 2010

There have been a number of on ice ‘incidents’ in the NHL this year from Hjalmarsson’s hit from behind on Pominville to James Wisniewski’s obscene gesture to last nights Rick Rypien’s clash with a Minnesota Wild fan. Every time one of these incidents take place it seems everyone in the hockey world participates in the ‘guess the suspension’ game. Some will guess 2 games, some will guess 10 games, some won’t be satisfied with the suspension even before the NHL makes a ruling, some think the NHL is always too harsh, many think the NHL is always too lenient. To me it is all one big yawn. I mean, who cares really.

My opinion on all of these incidents/suspensions, especially the player vs player incidents, is this: If the NHL and the NHLPA are fine with the suspensions, so am I. The NHLPA has the responsiblity of looking out for its players, even the ones who get hit from behind, so if they are OK with a 2 game suspension for the Hjalmarsson hit, so am I. The NHL and its owners are responsible for paying injured players who get illegally hit from behind so if they are OK with a 2 game suspension for the Hjalmarsson hit, so am I. I am just a fan. I don’t risk my health playing the game nor am I risking a huge investment in the form of an ownership stake and a an injured players salary. The same goes for the should fighting be allowed in hockey argument. It isn’t up to me to decide, it is up to the NHL and the NHLPA.

From my perspective, what I enjoy is hockey. I enjoy watching the game of hockey and talking about hockey on several levels from that highly skilled play to who is the best player in the NHL to how to build a successful hockey team. Playing “guess the suspension’ games I enjoy not so much. Unfortunately players make mistakes and players do stupid things in the heat of the battle, I just wish everyone wouldn’t let a few stupid incidents dominate the discussion.

Stop the Insanity Howard…

June 11th, 2010

Howard Berger, along with many in the main stream Toronto hockey media, has made it his mission to constantly berate Brian Burke for trading away his first round draft picks in this years draft as well as next years. This years of course has turned out to be the second overall pick. Today his reasoning for this stance uses the recent Stanley Cup winning Chicago Blackhawks to support his case Read More...

Is Yzerman in Tampa a good fit?

May 25th, 2010

I have to wonder whether taking the GM job in Tampa was the best move for Steve Yzerman, or whether Steve Yzerman was the best choice for the GM job in Tampa. The rumour was that the Lightning ownership offered Yzerman the job several times only to be rejected by Yzerman until the Lightning made an offer too rich for Yzerman to refuse Read More...

The Phoenix Coyote Mess

May 7th, 2010

Just over one year ago today Gary Bettman and the NHL they were ready to present then Phoenix Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes with a Jerry Reinsdorf offer to purchase the team but just hours prior to that meeting Jerry Moyes had the Coyotes file for bankruptcy in hopes of selling the team to Jim Balsillie who would move the team to Hamilton Read More...

Bryan Murray’s acquisitions…

April 26th, 2010

I was doing a bit of research for another article that I might write and I came upon an interesting observation.  Bryan Murray took over as General Manager of the Ottawa Senators in the summer of 2007.  Since that time he has brought in many new faces to the Ottawa Senators including Kuba, Kovalev, Michalek, Cheechoo, Campoli, and this year added Cullen and Sutton at the trade deadline Read More...

An Unqualified Failure or Important Step Forward?

April 12th, 2010

Yesterday Howard Berger wrote that the Leafs 2009-10 season was an unqualified failure.  On the surface that seems obvious considering they finished the season second last in the NHL ahead of only the even more dreadful Oilers.  But has it really been a complete and utter failure?  I am not so sure about that Read More...

Recipe for Failure?

April 5th, 2010

There is a story going around today that Brett Hull is attempting to put together a group to purchase the Dallas Stars from fianancially troubled owner Tom Hicks and that Hull is trying to get Wayne Gretzky and Mike Modano on board.  My question is this:  Is that a recipe for disaster?  Lets look at the evidence Read More...

What’s left to watch?

March 31st, 2010

Unlike most of the post-lockout seasons, there really isn't a lot of teams in contention for a playoff spot with most teams having 5 or 6 games remaining in the regular season. There will be 14 teams that miss the playoffs this year and we can pretty much name 11 of them (Carolina, Florida, NY Islanders, Tampa Bay, Toronto, St Read More...
